Legal requirements for employee accommodations are increasingly complex. This session will review lessons learned from the first year of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA), the heightened religious accommodation requirements following the Supreme Court’s 2023 Groff v. Dejoy decision, and recent cases on disability accommodation.

This presentation will cover the importance of keeping up to date with new legal requirements and ensuring that your employee handbook complies with the law.  We will cover recent changes that warrant policy updates, as well as other areas where it is important to implement strong policies.

1) Workers' Compensation Update - Review of Ohio Appellate and Supreme Court Cases affecting workers’ compensation matters in Ohio, including the AutoZone, Dillon, Moorehead/Waste Management/Walters cases.

 

2) OSHA: A Look Back and a Look Forward - Join us as we highlight some of OSHA’s recent, significant activities, including the new “Walkaround” rule and proposed Heat Injury standard, and discuss what to expect in the year ahead.

 

3) Immigration Update - This session will discuss recent developments in employment-based immigration, including policy announcements and latest trends.  The session will also cover issues related to Form I-9 completion and acceptable documents for individuals who have expiring work authorization.

We will provide an update on recent developments in labor law and NLRB activity over the past year. This will include a discussion of the recent cases on union election petitions and election conduct. We will also discuss other recent labor developments.

We will provide an overview of recent trends, developments and interesting cases in discrimination law.  Our intention is to focus on Title VII, the ADEA, and areas/cases not being discussed in other sessions.

This session will discuss the emergence of AI in the modern workplace. It will discuss how the law treats AI in the workplace, risks employers face with their use and employees’ use of AI in their workplace, and provide best practices for dealing with institutional use of AI.

Even the most careful employer sometimes discovers mistakes related to its retirement plan. This is especially true considering the interplay of statutory and regulatory requirements, complex payroll and computer systems, and sometimes simple human error. In this session, we will provide an overview of the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Labor programs for correcting retirement plan errors. We will also provide examples of how to fix certain common mistakes under Secure 2.0 and current IRS and DOL guidance.

This session will discuss legislative and case law updates and guidance on the wage and hour issues that companies deal with every day.  From a new exempt salary threshold to many changes on the horizon from the Department of Labor.

The legal landscape concerning the permissible use of medical and recreational marijuana continues to evolve, leaving employers with a complex – and often hazy –environment to navigate.  This session will provide an update on legalization and discuss how employers are responding to the challenges marijuana and hemp-derived intoxicants pose to workplace drug testing.

In this session, you will learn how to create the key elements of a crisis communication plan and how to implement it in your organization, understand the best practices and techniques for delivering clear and concise messages to your stakeholders and avoid the common pitfalls and mistakes that can damage your reputation and credibility.
